Most exotic cars on the road have a lien on them. A Huracan financed through a credit union, an F8 on a balloon note, a 911 Turbo S on a lease buyout that turned into a loan. Owners assume that means they have to pay the car off before they can sell it. They do not. The buyer pays the bank, the bank releases the title, and the seller gets what is left.
Here is how J&S Autohaus handles it from Ewing, New Jersey, for cars anywhere in the country.
Step one: the payoff letter
The seller calls the lender and asks for a 10-day payoff. The letter shows the exact amount to close the loan, the per-diem interest, and where to send the money. Most lenders email it the same day. J&S can request it directly with the seller's permission.
That number is the only number that matters for the lien. Not the balance on the app, not last month's statement. The payoff letter.
Step two: the offer
J&S appraises the car the same way whether it has a loan or not: year, model, spec, miles, condition, service history, and what the store can retail it for out of the same building on North Olden Avenue. The offer is for the car. The loan is just a line item in the paperwork.
Three outcomes:
- Offer is higher than the payoff. J&S wires the lender the payoff and wires the seller the difference. That is the normal case on a well-kept car.
- Offer equals the payoff. J&S pays the lender. The seller walks away clean with no check and no bill.
- Offer is lower than the payoff. The seller brings the difference to closing. J&S will say so up front, before anyone signs anything, and the seller can decide whether that works.
Step three: title and release
The lender holds the title until the payoff posts. Once it does, the lender releases the title to J&S, not to the seller. The seller signs a bill of sale, a power of attorney for the title transfer, and an odometer statement. J&S handles the rest in Ewing, including the New Jersey or out-of-state paperwork.
Electronic titles (most newer loans in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Texas, and California) release in a few business days. Paper titles take a week or two depending on the lender. Either way, the seller is done the day the car is picked up.
Step four: pickup
Enclosed transport comes to the seller. The seller does not drive the car to Ewing and does not hand it to a wholesaler. Payment to the lender and payment to the seller both go out when the car is inspected on pickup and the paperwork is signed.
What to have ready
- The payoff letter, or the lender's name and the last four of the loan number so J&S can request it
- A photo of the registration and the VIN plate
- Mileage and a short list of service history
- Photos: four corners, interior, engine bay, odometer
What J&S will not do
- Ask the seller to pay the car off first
- Let the seller hand over the car before the payoff is confirmed in writing
- Change the number after the car arrives, unless the car is not what was described
Selling a financed exotic is not harder than selling a paid-off one. It is one extra letter and one extra wire. Owners can start at jsautohaus.com/sell-my-exotic-car or call (609) 245-6634. J&S Autohaus, 1723 N. Olden Ave., Ewing, New Jersey. In Ewing since 1995, buying nationwide.
