Every exotic owner who is thinking about the next car runs the same math. Trade the current car toward a new one, or sell it outright and show up with cash. The answer is not the same for a 2017 911 Turbo S as it is for a 2020 Huracán EVO, and it is not the same for an owner who is buying out of a dealer as it is for an owner who is buying private.
This is how J&S Autohaus in Ewing, New Jersey, works through it on the phone, before the car ever leaves the driveway.
1. The two numbers are not the same number
The trade number and the buy number are not the same number, and the owner should see both.
The buy number is what J&S will pay in cash for the car as a standalone deal. The owner takes the check and walks.
The trade number is what J&S will give for the car against a specific car on its own floor. On the right pairing, the trade can beat the buy number. On the wrong pairing, it will not.
The owner should ask for both, in writing, before deciding.
2. The sales tax question
In New Jersey, a trade-in reduces the taxable price of the replacement car by the amount of the trade. On a six-figure replacement, that is real money, and it changes the comparison.
The outright sale does not touch sales tax. The owner banks the full sale price and pays full tax on the next car wherever that car is bought.
Owners outside New Jersey should check their own state. Florida, Texas, and California treat the trade credit differently than New Jersey does.
J&S will show the owner the two totals side by side: cash out from an outright sale, versus cash out plus tax savings from a trade against the specific replacement car.
3. The replacement car matters
The trade works best when the owner is buying a car J&S already has, or can get. A 2019 Huracán EVO Spyder going toward a Revuelto on the J&S floor is a different conversation than a 2019 Huracán EVO Spyder going toward a car at a store in another state.
If the owner is buying private party, the outright sale is almost always cleaner. The owner sells the current car to J&S, cashes the check, and goes to the other seller with cash in hand.
4. Timing
An outright sale closes when the title and payoff clear. On a clean title with no loan, that is often same day in Ewing. On a payoff, the lender turnaround is the gate, usually a few business days.
A trade only closes when the replacement car is ready to deliver. If the replacement car is a build, an inbound unit, or a car still in detail, the owner may be driving the current car for weeks. The owner should know that going in.
5. The payoff on the current car
A loan on the current car does not change the choice. J&S gets a payoff letter from the lender, pays the lender directly, and nets the difference to the owner. That is true on an outright sale and on a trade.
A lease is also fine. J&S handles the lease buyout with the lender and quotes the equity position to the owner before anything moves.
6. The appraisal does not change
Whether the owner is trading or selling outright, the appraisal is the same work. The appraiser confirms model, trim, miles, service history, paint, options, and title, and builds the number from what the car retails for out of the same building in Ewing. The owner gets the same honest number either way.
What changes is how that number is paid out: as a check, or as a credit against a specific replacement car.
7. When the trade is the right call
- The owner is already buying a car J&S has or can get.
- The replacement is a higher-ticket car in New Jersey, where the trade-in tax credit is material.
- The owner wants one appointment, one set of paperwork, and one drive home.
8. When the outright sale is the right call
- The owner is buying private party, out of state, or from a dealer that does not want a trade.
- The replacement car is not lined up yet.
- The owner just wants to be done with the current car and does not need a replacement right now.
